Reading to Write, Writing to Read: Teaching students to learn the language while learning content
Kyung-Hee Bae, Rice University
Of the many challenges that language instructors may face when they are assigned to teach content-based courses (in which they also have to teach the language), one major challenge often is the difficulty of the balancing act between teaching content and language. Using her own course materials and drawing on her own teaching experiences, the presenter will illustrate how language teaching can be integrated with a content area. The presenter will start the session with a brief description of the content-based, graduate-level writing course that she currently teaches, and she will then share course activities and assignments that can be modified to fit any content-based courses. The session will also include a hands-on discussion activity to help attendees apply what they discuss during the session to their own courses/teaching materials.
